WeCanVax has been collaborating with Art Extension over the past few months to add hints of art to the Parc Extension neighbourhood and to support local artists in a creative way. Art Extension is an initiative that’s purpose is to take old, out-of-commission satellite dishes and transform them into pieces of art. This initiative has transformed 38 neighbourhood satellite dishes with the help of 30 local artists to date. The WeCanVax collaboration with Art Extension was to design a dish that encapsulated the era of COVID-19 in the multicultural community of Parc Extension. We hope this dish can serve as a lasting symbol of the resiliency that this community endured, and a reminder of all its residents have overcome. The artist of the WeCanVax dish named “The Mask” is Annie Hamel who specializes in painting textile patterns and multicultural fabrics.
Art Extension began with two locals, Jon Cohen and Lisa Baum, who went on frequent walks throughout the neighbourhood during COVID-19 stay-at-home orders in the summer of 2020. On their walks, they noticed there were quite a few satellite dishes in the area and came up with the idea of painting these dishes to add more vibrance to the neighbourhood. Since then, Jon and Lisa have worked with many residents and artists, among others, to bring this initial vision to fruition.
To have a satellite dish painted, Art Extension first asks the resident who owns the dish if they want their dish painted, and if so, the resident can indicate their preferences for what is painted on it. Art Extension also has an easy-to-use messaging system on their website for both residents with a dish and artists who want to be a part of this initiative to state their interest.

Un symbole de la résilience de Parc-Extension
Au cours des derniers mois, WeCanVax a travaillé avec Art Extension afin d’ajouter des petits bijoux d’art dans le quartier de Parc-Extension et d’appuyer des artistes locaux. Art Extension est une initiative qui vise à faire des œuvres d’art à partir d’antennes paraboliques hors d’usage. Jusqu’à présent, cette initiative a transformé 38 antennes paraboliques du quartier avec l’aide de 30 artistes locaux. La collaboration entre WeCanVax et Art Extension visait à concevoir une antenne qui symboliserait l’expérience de la COVID-19 dans la communauté multiculturelle de Parc-Extension. Nous espérons que cette antenne pourra servir comme symbole de résilience de tout ce que la communauté a enduré et surmonté. Nommé « Le Masque », l’antenne de WeCanVax a été conçue par l’artiste Annie Hamel qui se spécialise dans la peinture des motifs textiles et des motifs multiculturels
Art Extension a commencé avec deux résidents de Parc-Extension, Jon Cohen et Lisa Baum, qui prenaient des marches très souvent parmi les restrictions sanitaires de l’été 2020. En marchant dans le quartier, ils ont remarqué qu’il y avait pas mal d’antennes paraboliques dans la zone et ils ont eu l’idée de les peinturer pour ajouter de la couleur au quartier. Depuis, Jon et Lisa ont travaillé avec plusieurs résidents et artistes afin de faire de cette vision une réalité.
Avant de faire peinturer une antenne, Art Extension demande d’abord à la propriétaire de l’antenne si elle veut faire peinturer son antenne. Si la réponse est oui, la personne peut indiquer sa préférence pour le sujet de la peinture. Pour les gens intéressés à participer, Art extension a un système de messagerie sur leur site web pour les résidents qui ont une antenne ainsi que pour les artistes qui veulent en peinturer.
